IMG_9064 (1)Oh, the weather outside is frightful,

But our sauna is so delightful.

Naturally, colder weather makes using the infrared sauna more popular because people want to be warmer. But did you know that saunas have been used in many cultures for thousands of years to improve health and function? The holiday season can bring its own challenges, and we wanted to share with you 8 reasons using the sauna this time of year can be so beneficial.

1) Relaxation/De-Stress: It is no surprise to anyone that the holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year, even more so in 2021. Finding the perfect gifts, having enough money to spend on food and gifts, balancing  holiday events, dealing with family, staying safe and healthy, the list goes on and on. Using a sauna can help you relax tense muscles, and is an instant stress reliever. When I am done with a sauna session, I always feel like I’m swimming in endorphins and feel lighter. I use the time to meditate, listen to relaxing music, journal, or hang with a bestie to have some uplifting girlfriend time. Sauna sessions are a must for holiday de-stressing.

2) Detoxification: Let’s face it, the months between Halloween and New Year’s Day are probably the worst for our bodies. With all the sugar, cocktails, and mental stress, it’s no wonder how our bodies get loaded up with toxins. Add in the fact that it’s colder so we are getting less fresh air and sunshine, and we become a toxic hot mess. The sweating process is a powerful way to cleanse the body and release all kinds of garbage. It’s great to do during the holidays to avoid becoming super toxic, but it’s also great to add to a post-holiday cleanse to fully detox the system. Your liver will thank you.

3) Weight Loss: And that ties into number 2. All that bad eating and poor decision making can really pack on the pounds. Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pie and gravy, Christmas cookies and eggnog, NYE champagne–how do we say no to any of it? The past 3 months of the year we typically put on more weight than the other 9 combined! A 60-minute sauna sesh can burn up to 600 calories and should definitely be included if you want to Burn the Bird.

4) Boost Immune System: There are many reasons we tend to get sick more this time of year–decreased vitamin D, stress, poor diet, too much sugar, enclosed spaces. When our bodies get toxic, it suppresses our immune system. The sauna helps boost immunity by slightly raising the body’s temp, which helps to kill off germs. It also helps sweat out garbage and cleans house, so we are less inflamed and less likely to get sick.

5) Clearer, Tighter Skin: I mean, HELLO who does not want to look gorgeous for their family photos by the tree and all the holiday parties?? We all get our hair did at the holidays, why not have great skin to go with it? Again, it all comes down to the sweat factor, and it really helps to open up those pores and get the junk out. Often our skin is a reflection of what’s happening on the inside. So it makes sense that if we toxic on the inside, it’s going to reflect poorly on the outside. Get your glow on with some sauna sessions for a fabulous holiday season.

6) Pain Relief: All of this holiday shopping, stress and tension, sugar headaches, shoveling and raking can really make for some tight muscles. A sauna sesh can help relax muscles and decrease tension, making you feel and move better. Some people also report improvement of chronic pain like fibromyalgia and Lyme’s as well. It’s a great time of the year to be feeling and functioning at your best.

7) Improved Circulation: In good old Wisco, many people suffer with cold hands and feet in the winter time, and have poor circulation in these areas. This is a bummer for playing in the snow with your kids, or even just walking outside. Sauna sessions increase blood flow and can dramatically improve warmth and circulation for hours after. It makes shopping and snow play a lot more enjoyable when you don’t have icicles in your mittens.

8) Better Sleep: The days that I use the sauna, I literally feel like I had an intense workout. I get that rush of endorphins, and then later that night I feel so relaxed and have the best sleep. Helping release muscle tension and toxins, and decreasing stress can all be factors in why sleep is improved. We need high quality to heal and stay healthy, and also to handle to the stress of the season. If you find that you have difficulty sleeping during the holidays, then add sauna sessions to your routine and see the difference.
