November 2008
Dear Friend of New Beginnings Chiropractic,

Change is in the air, whether it's the cooling temps and seasonal transition, or the changes we face as a nation with our newly elected president. Change can be good in many ways, especially if it involves your health and well being.  Whatever is going on in life, it is important not to lose sight of our health, beacause without health we have nothing.

To celebrate health and well-being this month, we invite you to our Fall Into Health Open House on Sat Nov 8th!  All services are free! Read on for more details about this exciting event.

November is also a great time to quit smoking, which can also have a big impact on your health. If you are looking to change this habit, or would like a friend or loved on to, please read the article by our acupuncturist, Ronghua Jiang.

The weather changes can also stir up the cold and flu. Read about how chiropractic care can boost your immune system, and which essential oils are essential to protect yourself from getting sick.

Don't forget about the Holisitc Moms Open House on Wed Nov 19th! Get more details in Healthy Extras!

We hope you enjoy this month's  issue, and as always, feel free to pass it along to anyone who may enjoy it as well!

Cold & Flu Virus: What Really Helps?

Dr. Joe Ryan, DC

WHAT CAUSES A COLD?

Breathing in a cold virus does not itself cause a cold. If you try to give someone a cold for example, it takes more than just the virus. Scientists have incubated cold viruses, placed them directly on the mucous lining of the nose, and found that their subjects came down with colds only 12 percent of the time. For germs to grow in you, you must have a weakened immune system.

THE MEDICAL APPROACH

Conventional medicine offers no cure for the common cold. Taking antibiotics for a cold is unnecessary because colds are associated with viruses (antibiotics work only on bacteria). Giving antibiotics "just in case" has been criticized in the medical literature as unnecessary and dangerous.  Flu shots often don't prevent the flu either.  Usually the 2 or 3 strains that make up the shots are not the actual strains that go around in a particular year.  Influenza itself is not as common as people think, and most of the cases of the "flu" diagnosed each year are not influenza, and therefore the shots would offer them no protection.

THE CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH

Chiropractic does not treat the common cold. However, chiropractic care can help raise your natural resistance to disease by removing interference to your proper body function, known as vertebral subluxations. Vertebral subluxations are misalignments in the spine that can cause irritation to the spinal nerves, therefore affecting how your nervous system and body communicate. Keeping the lines of communication open will ensure your immune system is ready to fight off viruses and other germs. Remember a fever is one of your body's defense mechanisms, helping you destroy an invading infectious organism. Lowering a fever with over the counter medications reduces this defense against disease. Keeping your body free from vertebral subluxation keeps your natural immunity high and could make the difference between a quick recovery and lingering illness. A spinal exam could change your life.

Acupuncture to Quit Smoking

Acupuncture Q & A

Dr. Ronghua Jiang, LAc

Can Acupuncture help stop smoking?

Yes. Auricular (ear) acupuncture especially can help you quit smoking.  Inserting fine needles into your hands and ears will regulate and harmonize your central nervous system, releasing certain hormones which will help diminish cravings for cigarettes.  Many people become upset or agitated when they quit smoking, and acupuncture can help you relax and remain calm during the withdrawal.  After acupuncture treatments, you will notice very bitter and unpleasant sensations if you smoke cigarettes again.  As a result, you will no longer want to smoke cigarettes.

How many treatments are needed to stop smoking?

In general it takes about 4 visits within about 2 weeks.  Depending on your smoking history and the daily amount of cigarettes, some people may need 5-6 treatments.  In comparison with other methods to stop smoking, acupuncture treatments are much easier and more pleasant.

November 20th is the Great American Smoke-out Day.  Many people may want to stop smoking and live in a healthy life style.  Our clinic will have an open house on November 8th from 2-5pm. You are welcome to visit our clinic for a free consultation and first treatment to start quitting smoking.

Fall Into Health Open House!

Schedule of Events for the Open House on Saturday, November 8th from 2-5pm

Dr. Brenda Trudell-Spinal Screenings 2-4 PM

Spinal screenings are a non-invasive way of detecting imbalances in the spine.  Patients will be fully clothed and seated comfortably in a chair.  Dr. Trudell will be using a handheld scanning device called Myovision and running it up your spine from the upper back to the top of the neck.   The device will be connected to a computer, and your results will be determined immediately. The Myovision will detect heat imbalances in your spine from side to side, which often indicate areas of misalignment, irritation or injury. Feel free to take a copy of your results with you when you leave!  Dr. Trudell will also be doing nutritional screenings as well.  Feel free to discuss any nutritional questions with her.

Dr. Joe Ryan-Foot Scans 3-5 PM

A balanced body is a happier body!  A body that's out of balance can be causing you pain anywhere from your feet all the way up to your neck.  Custom-made Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers are specifically made for your feet and for your unique postural condition.  A quick computerized scan of your feet can tell a great deal of information to determine the type of care that is needed for you.  For instance, a person with chronic low back pain could have foot problems as well.  If you have flat feet, this can turn your knee in and pull your hip out, causing extra stress on your low back.  Dr. Ryan will be available to scan your feet and interpret the results for you.  This only takes about five minutes and many of my patients can tell you it can change your life!

Dr. Ronghua Jiang-Group Ear Acupuncture 2-4 PM

Auricular (ear) acupuncture works well for many conditions, including quitting smoking, headaches, depression and anxiety. For the group ear acupuncture session, guests will be seated comfortably in chairs and fully clothed.  Very tiny needles will be inserted into the ears and hands in specific acupuncture points. More than one person can participate at a time, and the group dynamic often increases the energy in the room.  Guests can relax and enjoy the 20-25 minute treatment.  For more info on quitting smoking during the Great American Smokeout, please ask Ronghua.

Amy Mertz-Chair Massages 2-3 & 4-5 PM

Amy Mertz, CMT, will be doing 10-minute chair massages targeting the head, neck, arms and back. If you have never had a massage before, a chair massage is a good introduction because you remain fully clothed and are sitting upright on a specially designed chair. Chair massage increases blood circulation and stimulates the muscles while promoting deep relaxation.

David Palmer, co-developer of the first massage chair and founder of the TouchPro Institute in San Francisco, has attributed many office-related physical symptoms to decreased circulation. When muscles tighten due to stress, and a person spends most of the day confined to a desk, blood and lymph flow throughout the body is disrupted. Mental fogginess, fatigue and repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome may occur. Chair massage is often done in office settings because of its many benefits, but anyone -- from youth to seniors -- can reap the rewards of chair massage.

Rita Stanton-Reiki Sessions 3-5 PM

During the Reiki session, each person will be fully clothed while lying on a massage table or sitting in a reiki chair. The practitioner works on the body or slightly above the body, by placing hands on specific body positions for several minutes at at time, which helps to balance the energy.  You may notice a relaxing and calming effect, or a rush of energy or warmth.  Soft music is played to help relax. Reiki can help with many problems, from stress to pain management to helping with chronic illness.  If you have any reiki questions, please feel free to ask Rita Stanton.

Shelley Ferguson-Health Analysis 2-3 & 4-5 PM

The health analysis is done fully clothed, standing or lying down. It is a version of muscle testing using whole food supplements to correct imbalances in the body. It is simply holding your arm out and applying some basic resistance while Shelley applies a gentle downward pressure on your arm. Her other hand is placed on the areas where your organs and other reflexes are located, and she tests it against them with your arm. If there is an organ/area under stress, your arm will weaken.  This gives Shelley information on areas that may be imbalanced or show nutritional deficiencies.

**When not in a session, each of the practitioners will be available for questions, comments and other information.  Feel free to enjoy refreshments and other activities while waiting for your session.

Essential Oil of the Month:

Myrtaceae to Help Fight Cold and Flu

Rita Stanton, RN

This family of essential oils is well known for its direct action on the respiratory system and its keen ability to inhibit infections. These essential oils awaken a new sense of strength and vitality. Family members include: Myrtle, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Clove, Niaouli, Nutmeg, Cajeput and Bay.
Eucalyptus is extracted from the fresh or partially dried leaves of one of the world's tallest trees, which is cultivated in Australia, Spain and Portugal.

The best treatment for a cold or flu is prevention. Because many essential oils have strong anti-microbial properties, they can be diffused to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses. If you now have a cold or flu it may be used for inhalation: add 2-3 drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water, handkerchief or dry sauna. Or dilute it 50-50, and massage 1-3 drops on each of the following areas: forehead, nose, cheeks, lower throat, chest and upper back, 1-3 times daily. A carrier oil such as almond or jojoba oil must be used with eucalyptus. Mix one part essential oil to one part carrier or massage oil. Do not use around the eyes. All oils require caution and keep them out of the reach of children.
