Common Pregnancy Complaints Chiropractic Can Help With (Beyond Just Back Pain)
By Dr. Brenda Trudell, Prenatal & Pediatric Chiropractor in Mount Horeb, WI
Pregnancy is one of the most powerful, transformational times in a woman’s life. It’s also a time of rapid change—hormones, posture, blood sugar, immune function, digestion, sleep, mood… all shifting as your baby grows.
Most moms know that chiropractic can help with aches and pains. What many don’t realize is that chiropractic care in pregnancy is really about your nervous system—the master communication system between your brain and body. When that system is working well, every cell, tissue, and organ can get clearer messages. That’s good for you and your baby.
During pregnancy, your nervous system helps coordinate:
- Hormones
- Blood sugar and blood pressure
- Immune function
- Digestion and elimination
- Respiration (breathing)
- Focus, mood, and sleep
When there’s interference in that system—what chiropractors call subluxation—signals can get “jammed,” and that can show up as pain, tension, poor digestion, or feeling stuck in stress mode. Gentle prenatal chiropractic adjustments aim to restore better communication so your body can self-regulate more effectively.
Wouldn’t you say pregnancy is the most important time to have your communication system working its best?
Wellness: The Real Reason Many Moms Come In
Most pregnant women who walk through our doors have one big desire in common:
A calm, healthy, drug-free pregnancy where they feel good in their body and confident about birth.
Even if they come in for “back pain,” they’re really seeking:
- A more comfortable, enjoyable pregnancy
- Less stress and anxiety
- Better sleep and more energy
- Natural options before medications when possible
Chiropractic care can be a powerful part of that wellness plan.
Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic: Fight-or-Flight vs. Rest-and-Digest
You’re going to hear me talk a lot about two sides of your nervous system:
- Sympathetic – “fight or flight” (think: being chased by a bear)
- Parasympathetic – “rest, digest, and heal”
We absolutely need both. The problem is when moms get stuck in sympathetic mode—chronic stress, worry, tension, and a body that can’t fully shift into rest, healing, and digestion.
Gentle chiropractic adjustments, especially at:
- The upper neck / cranial area (vagus nerve support) and
- The sacrum / sacral plexus
can help support a shift back toward parasympathetic dominance. That often looks like: deeper breaths, better digestion, easier bowel movements, improved sleep, decreased pain/tension, and less anxiety.
Common Pregnancy Complaints & How Chiropractic May Help
These are some of the most common complaints we have seen from expecting moms in our office over the past 20 years and how chiropractic care may help support them.
1. Sciatica & Low Back Pain
What it feels like:
Pain in the low back, buttocks, or shooting down the back of the leg to the knee, calf, or foot. Sometimes it’s a “pain in the butt,” sometimes a sharp, electric-type pain.
Why it happens:
- Misalignment in the lumbar spine, sacrum, or pelvis putting pressure on the sciatic nerve
- Piriformis muscle spasm in the buttocks, lying right over the sciatic nerve
- Increased lumbar curve as the belly grows
- Baby’s position placing extra pressure on sacral nerves
- Relaxin causing joint instability in the pelvis and low back
- Pre-existing low back or disc issues made worse by pregnancy changes
How chiropractic may help:
We gently assess whether the issue is coming from the lumbar spine, sacrum, pelvis, or muscular tension and use specific prenatal-safe adjustments and muscle and ligament release work to relieve pressure and restore better alignment and function.
2. Pubic Symphysis Pain (Front-of-the-Pelvis Pain)
What it feels like:
Sharp or aching pain right in the front of the pelvis (pubic bone), especially with walking, rolling over, lifting one leg to put on pants, going up stairs, or lunging or squatting workouts.
Contributors:
- Increased weight and pressure in the front of the pelvis
- Misalignments in the back of the pelvis that show up as pain in the front
- Relaxin (hormone) creating instability in the cartilage in the small joint between the two pubic bones
- Certain movements (lunges, squats, running) irritating the area
- Often worse or starts earlier in subsequent pregnancies if not addressed
How chiropractic may help:
- Adjustments to realign the pelvis, sacrum, lumbars, hips and pubic symphysis
- Checking and balancing the round ligaments that attach to the pubic area
- Suggestions for modifications (avoid lunges/squats, rolling in bed with knees together, sitting to put on pants)
- Gentle exercises and supports to stabilize the area
3. Headaches & Neck/Shoulder Tension
Common causes in pregnancy:
- Hormonal shifts, especially in the first trimester
- Postural changes: increased low back curve often leads to a straighter neck, changing muscle tension
- Shoulder and upper back tension from increased breast size
- Dehydration and overall stress
How chiropractic may help:
By restoring better alignment in the neck, upper back, and shoulders and addressing muscular imbalances, many moms experience fewer and less intense headaches. Adjustments may also support more balanced nervous system function during those hormonally intense months.
4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What it feels like:
Hand pain, numbness, tingling, weakness—especially at night or with repetitive movements.
Why it’s common in pregnancy:
- Cervical curve changes affecting the nerves that travel into the arms and hands
- Relaxin loosening ligaments in the wrist and hand, allowing small bones to shift and create pressure on nerves
- Water retention, which increases pressure in a very tight space in the wrist
- Repetitive motions (typing, mousing, lifting toddlers)
How chiropractic may help:
- Adjustments to the wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, and upper back
- Posture recs, exercises and workstation tips
- Suggestions for stretches and nighttime strategies to reduce symptoms
5. Heartburn, Reflux & Digestion
Why digestion changes:
- Baby and growing uterus pushing up on the stomach and esophagus
- Hormones affecting digestive motility
- Spinal and rib changes affecting the nerves that innervate the stomach and esophagus
- Slower digestion and constipation backing things up
How chiropractic may help:
- Adjustments to the mid-back and ribs to support the nerves that supply your digestive organs
- Gentle work with the diaphragm and adjustments to pelvic area to create more space
- Discussion of supportive habits (hydration, posture, movement)
6. Constipation & Hemorrhoids
Constipation can be linked to:
- Pressure on the lumbar and sacral nerves that control the intestines and rectum
- Baby’s position or a tipped-back (retroverted) uterus pressing on the bowels
- Stress impacting vagus nerve and keeping you stuck in “fight or flight,” slowing digestion
- Painful hemorrhoids making you reluctant to go
Hemorrhoids may be related to:
- Pressure from the baby and extra fluids
- Constipation and straining
- Poor venous return and fluid retention
How chiropractic may help:
- Restoring better function in the lumbar, sacral, and upper cervical areas involved in digestion
- Supporting your body’s natural rhythms (rest-and-digest)
- Specific adjustments that can help many women find relief from hemorrhoids and bowel issues
7. Rib Pain & Thoracic Pain
What it feels like:
- Sharp, stabbing, aching, or burning pain along the ribs, especially under the breasts or along the bra line
- Mid-back pain made worse by sitting, working, or certain positions
Contributors:
- Baby pushing up under the ribs
- Increased breast size pulling the shoulders forward
- Postural shifts through the thoracic spine
- Less movement or awkward work positions (computers, hairdressing, dental work, etc.)
How chiropractic may help:
- Adjustments to the thoracic spine and ribs
- Work with the diaphragm to create more room and ease breathing
- Practical posture and movement strategies for daily life and work
8. Swelling, Edema & Fluid Retention
Some swelling in late pregnancy can be normal, but it’s important to rule out serious concerns with your medical provider (such as preeclampsia or kidney issues).
Contributors:
- Increased overall blood volume and fluid in the body
- Harder work returning blood and lymph from the legs back to the heart
- Less movement at the end of pregnancy
- Veins rely on muscle contraction to move fluid—if you’re uncomfortable and not moving much, that slows everything down
How chiropractic may help:
- Supporting optimal lymph and venous flow by keeping the spine and pelvis moving well
- Making you more comfortable so you can walk, stretch, and move more
- Encouraging healthy nervous system function to assist the body’s fluid regulation
(Note: Extreme or sudden swelling, especially with headaches or vision changes, should always be evaluated urgently by your OB/midwife.)
9. Stress, Anxiety & Sleep
Pregnancy can increase the emotional load on a woman:
- Previous miscarriages or fertility struggles
- Complications earlier in pregnancy
- Advanced maternal age or concerning test results
- Financial stress, work stress, maternity leave worries
- Relationship or family stress
- Worry about birth, postpartum, and caring for other children
Stress isn’t just “in your head”—it shows up in your body and your baby’s environment, too.
How chiropractic may help:
- Supporting the vagus nerve and parasympathetic system through cranial and upper cervical adjustments
- Adjusting the sacrum to influence parasympathetic output from the lower end of the spine
- Helping reduce pain, which naturally reduces stress response
Our goal is to help you shift from constant fight-or-flight into a calmer, more grounded state that supports both you and your baby.
10. Immune Support & Overall Resilience
During pregnancy, your immune system makes special adjustments so it doesn’t attack your baby. That can leave some systems more vulnerable and others hypervigilant.
Chiropractic can support:
- Clearer nervous system communication with the immune system, and improved adaptability to stress which will support a stronger immune system
- Better lung function and deeper breathing through rib and thoracic adjustments
- Healthier digestion and regular bowel movements, which are closely tied to immune health
A healthier, more balanced mom means a healthier environment for baby.
11. Hip Pain, Diastasis Recti & Other Changes
We also frequently see:
- Hip joint pain from extra weight, side-sleeping, carrying small children and pelvic shifts
- Tight psoas and piriformis muscles affecting hip and pelvic comfort
- Diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles), especially later in pregnancy
- Meralgia paresthetica – numbness/tingling on the outer front thigh from nerve compression
Chiropractic care focuses on alignment of the hips, pelvis, and lumbar spine, plus supportive muscle work and referrals to physical therapy when appropriate.
What’s the “Big Picture” Takeaway?
While it’s helpful to talk about individual complaints (sciatica, headaches, constipation, etc.), the bigger picture is this:
When your brain, nervous system, and body are communicating clearly,
you have a much better chance of a comfortable, healthy, drug-free pregnancy.
Chiropractic doesn’t treat “pregnancy”, it supports it. It doesn’t treat each symptom individually. Instead, it removes interference in your nervous system so your body can do what it was designed to do—adapt, heal, grow a healthy baby, and prepare for a better birth.
