Prenatal Chiropractic in Mt. Horeb, WI–How Often do I Need to Get Adjusted?

New Beginnings Chiropractic

Hello again—Dr. Brenda Trudell here from Beginnings Chiropractic in Mt. Horeb, WI. Thank you for joining us for our All About That Bump webinar and blog series, “Your guide to prenatal chiropractic care.”
In today’s discussion, we’re diving into one of the most common questions I’m asked:

“How often should I come in for chiropractic care during pregnancy?”

There isn’t always one simple answer, because every pregnancy and every body is different. But there are patterns, guidelines, and important considerations that help us create the most effective care plan for each mama-to-be.

Why Prenatal Care Plans Are Unique

Pregnancy brings rapid physical, hormonal, and postural changes—weight gain, shifting center of gravity, relaxing ligaments, gait changes, and increased stress on the spine and nervous system. Because of these quick and intense changes, pregnant women often respond to chiropractic adjustments differently than non-pregnant patients.

Many women also notice that their adjustments “don’t hold” quite as long during pregnancy due to the hormone relaxin. That’s normal—and it’s one reason consistent care matters.

To design a specific, individualized care plan, we begin with a thorough prenatal neurological and musculoskeletal examination, including:

  • Range of motion
  • Posture
  • Thermal and muscle sEMG scans
  • Heart rate variability
  • Pelvic and sacral alignment (Webster Technique Analysis)
  • Overall stress load on the nervous system
  • Past health history/previous pregnancies and labor history

This helps us understand exactly what your body needs and how your care plan may need to evolve through each trimester.

Factors That Influence Care Frequency

Several things determine how often a pregnant woman should be adjusted:

1. When She Begins Care

  • Existing chiropractic patients usually require fewer visits initially—they start pregnancy with a body that’s already aligned, and are often coming in right when they find out they are expecting.
  • Starting in the third trimester, especially with pain, injuries, malposition or complications, typically requires more frequent adjustments closer together.
  • Beginning early in the first trimester allows us to stay ahead of changes and prevent many common problems stemming from chronic misalignment.

2. The Reason for the Visit

Care looks different if a mom is coming in for:

  • Sciatica
  • Low back or SI pain
  • Pubic symphysis discomfort
  • Round ligament tension
  • Malpositioned baby (like breech)
  • Increased stress or anxiety
  • Multiples
  • Overall prenatal wellness
  • VBAC/homebirth plan

3. Age & Previous Pregnancies

  • Younger moms *may respond faster than those in their late 30s or 40s.
  • Multiple pregnancies, especially close together, can create earlier or more pronounced discomfort.
  • Moms with toddlers at home—especially if they’re consistently carrying a child on one hip—often need extra support.

4. Stress Levels & Life Events

Stress has a direct effect on the nervous system and can change how often adjustments are needed.
Things like:

  • Illness
  • Injury
  • Slips and falls
  • High-stress job
  • Major life changes
  • High risk pregnancies

may temporarily require more frequent care.

Why Early & Consistent Care Matters

We always recommend beginning chiropractic care as soon as you know you’re pregnant—or even earlier if you’re trying to conceive. Early care helps:

  • Keep your spine and pelvis aligned
  • Support healthy nervous system function
  • Improved brain-body communication
  • Improve overall comfort
  • Potentially prevent baby malposition
  • Reduce stress on your body
  • Promote a smoother labor and birth
  • Improve function of vital systems (like digestion, hormones, elimination, sleep, and circulation)

Chiropractic care is not a “treat yourself at the end of pregnancy” luxury—it’s foundational support for the entire prenatal journey, labor and delivery, and postpartum recovery.

Pregnancy, Stress, and the Nervous System

The nervous system is the master controller of pregnancy.
Ideally, we want the body in parasympathetic mode—the rest, digest, grow, and heal state.

But stress, pain, anxiety, and daily demands can push moms into sympathetic mode—fight or flight.

This can contribute to:

  • Longer or more difficult labor
  • Breastfeeding challenges and low milk supply
  • Colicky or fussy babies
  • Reflux (mom and baby)
  • Poor sleep
  • Increased prenatal discomfort
  • Pregnancy challenges like preeclampsia, high blood pressure, preterm labor, gestational diabetes

Chiropractic care helps calm sympathetic overdrive while supporting healthy parasympathetic function, which benefits both mom and baby.

Recommended Schedule of Care

Following the health history, initial exam and consultation, we create a detailed, individualized plan.

However, as a general guideline, we recommend:

➤ At minimum: Once per week throughout pregnancy

This ensures we stay ahead of rapid physical, hormonal and neurological changes.

Increases in frequency may occur when:

  • There is pain or a specific condition (sciatica, SI pain, pubic symphysis dysfunction, rib pain, etc.)
  • Baby is breech or malpositioned
  • Relaxin surges in the third trimester, leading to increased mobility of joints
  • There’s an injury, illness, or stressful event
  • Mom is carrying multiples
  • Adjustments are not holding as long
  • Mom is caring other young children around on her hip

Think of this as optimizing—not reacting.
We want to address small things before they become big problems.

Optimization & At-Home Support

The goal is always a subluxation-free pregnancy and the most optimal environment for the growing baby.

To help moms hold adjustments longer, we may provide guidance on:

  • Exercises and stretches
  • Positional guidance for work and daily activities
  • Sleep recommendations
  • Nutritional support
  • At-home comfort measures
  • Pelvic balancing tools
  • Lifestyle modifications

We also strongly aim to minimize the need for medications or unnecessary interventions by supporting the body’s natural ability to adapt and heal.

Why Weekly Checkups Matter—Even Without Symptoms

Symptoms are often the last thing to show up when something is wrong.

You may feel great on the outside, while stress, tension or misalignment are building internally. Weekly check-ins allow us to:

  • Prevent and correct problems
  • Support the nervous system and musculoskeletal system
  • Promote a healthy, enjoyable pregnancy
  • Prepare the body for birth
  • Care for both mom and baby
  • Discuss concerns, offer alternative solutions for prenatal complaints
  • Plan for the future–postpartum care, breastfeeding support, newborn health, support healing

Early intervention always works better than waiting until something becomes severe.
